United Nations Peacekeeping is formed out two Chapters- Chapter VI and VII of UN Charter.
The chapter VI allows for the use of peaceful techniques in resolving international disputes and maintaining international peace and securities. While chapter VII on the other hand permits the use of coercion in enforcing the decisions of the security councils.
Now, Peacekeeping has grown from a small scale lightly armed forces charged with supervision, observation and interpositioning  to a more complex intervention involving military, humanitarian and political support roles that includes peacebuilding , civilians protection and human security.
Today, approximately 16 missions are ongoing. 100,746 Uniformed men and women are currently serving under UN peacekeeping operations. About121 countries are contributing to the operation. Fatalities incurred in all UN peace operations since 1949 is calculated to be 3,507.
