THE 29TH ASSEMBLY OF THE AFRICAN UNION: MONDAY HIGHLIGHTS

A donation of USD One million to capacitate the African Union Foundation was made by H.E. Mr. Robert Gabriel Mugabe, President of the Republic of Zimbabwe. He urged Africans to come together and build the continent “brick by brick, stone by stone”.

A road show for DotAfrica was launched today. DotAfrica is an African initiative created by Africans for Africans and the worldwide audience of companies, organizations and individuals interested in connecting with African community and markets. DotAfrica will bring the continent together as an internet community under one umbrella and creates an opportunity to forge a unique online identity which will associate products, services and /or information with the continent and the people of Africa

AU Gender Score Card (AGS) 2017 edition was presented. The score card is to provide the AUC and Member States with an implementation as well as a monitoring and accountability tool to assess the investments they have made in their youth, in particular the young women.

Three AGS awards were given, to 3 Heads of States : H.E Mr. Nana Akufo Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana,  H.E Mrs Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of the Republic of Liberia,  H.E Professor Alpha Conde president of the Republic of Guinea .

The AU Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki projected the work to be done by January 2018 summit:

First- to implement the relevant decisions to be taken by the Assembly in light of the report of President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, on the implementation of the reform of the African Union.

Second- to work in area of peace and security, with the objective of silencing the guns by 2020

Third-  to focus on humanitarian action in solidarity with the victims of drought, famine and forced displacement.

Fourth – the strategic development issues i.e. executing some integral projects for the benefit of African people.

Fifth – the need to speak with one voice

Partnership between African Union and -the United Nations and European Union, especially the cooperation in peace and security, economic, democratic and electoral governance was emphasized.

The President of the State of Palestine Mr. Mahmoud Abbas was in attendance, and thanked the African countries for their strong stand with the people of Palestine to achieve lasting peace.
